The University of Groningen is offering Talent Grants , aimed at supporting international students who wish to pursue a one-year Master’s programme in Theology & Religious Studies. These University of Groningen Talent Grants are designed to attract talented students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and provide financial assistance to help cover tuition fees and living expenses during their studies in the Netherlands. The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the Netherlands. It was mainly intended as a place of education for civil and church administrators and philologists, as well as lawyers and doctors. Please note As the Talent Grant does not amount to a full scholarship, you should acquire additional funding in order to fully finance your study. One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. The University of Groningen advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. € 10.000 to € 14.000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Must hold a non-EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for Dutch study grants or loans.
  • Admission: Must have obtained conditional admission to one of the specified MA tracks in Theology & Religious Studies.
  • Academic Excellence: Must demonstrate excellent academic performance during their bachelor/undergraduate studies.
  • Previous Education: Should not have already obtained a master’s degree from an institution in the Netherlands.
  • English Proficiency: Must have excellent English language proficiency according to the programme’s admission requirements.
  • Availability: Must be available for the entire duration of the programme.
  • Agreement: Must confirm in writing their agreement with the grant terms upon being awarded the Talent Grant.

Selection Criteria

Applicants are evaluated based on academic merit, including results from their previous studies, an academic paper, overall education evaluation, and motivational statements. A selection committee will review the applications, and decisions will be made by March for the September intake. Applicants will be notified by 15th May.

  1. Copy of the University of Groningen (conditional) admission letter.
  2. Recommendation letter from a PhD or Professor from your current/last degree programme.
  3. Transcript of Records from your current/last degree programme.
  4. Letter of motivation (maximum 500 words).
  5. Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Please note: application forms without a letter of admissions to one of the above mentioned programmes will not be processed.
